Coatings

BÖHLER USA can offer coatings via its sister company voestalpine eifeler Coatings which is home to state of-the-art Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coatings center, equipped with the latest in PVD coating process technology. PVD is a vacuum coating technique, which creates a film on the surface of the required material to maintain its hardness. The film improves part quality, creates higher productivity, and increases tool life. A major benefit of PVD coating is its use of low temperature during the procedure, which avoids distortions in the tool.

eifeler´s PVD coating centers specializes in creating custom coatings for the automotive, die casting, aerospace and plastic injection tooling industries, but is committed to accommodate a wide range of customer needs.

The coating centers works side by side with the BÖHLER steel division to offer our customers a complete solution – we are able to advise on an application with material selection, heat treatment specifications and coating technology.

At BÖHLER, we are devoted to providing on-time delivery, competitive prices for high performance coatings and exceptional customer service.

TIGRAL® coating is designed for tools in need of very high resistance against oxidation and abrasion. It is a two stage coating process, composed of a Plasma Nitride and followed by a mono layered matrix coating. This mono-layered matrix composition creates a very ductile film ideal for abrasive environments such as die casting and hot forging. TIGRAL® coating avoids the drawbacks associated with high temperature coatings, but easily matches their performance levels. The low temperature application process allows for the metallurgical characteristics of the steel to be maintained. The unique chemistry of TIGRAL® offers protection from materials that corrosively attack the tool steel, which results in reduced adhesive wear and alloying between work and tool materials, enhancing part release and greater productivity.

DUPLEX-TIGRAL® COATING

VARIANTIC® coating is a high performance coating consisting of a specially designed plasma-nitriding process combined with a low temperature nano-layered PVD coating. This nano-layered feature greatly reduces stress and improves ductility, which increases coating longevity by preventing microcracks in the film. VARIANTIC® coating was developed to avoid the distortions and disadvantages associated with high temperature coating processes such as CVD and TD coating, all while providing equivalent results. This coating allows for tools to be easily stripped and re-coated multiple times to maximize tool life without damage to the substrate. VARIANTIC® coating is ideal for high pressure applications where adhesive and abrasive wear of the tool is significantly reduced providing impressive production enhancements.

DUPLEX-VARIANTIC® COATING

The Duplex-VARIANTIC®-1000 is a multifunctional multilayer coating that represents an expansion of our PVD coatings for the forming process. Its high layer adhesion and excellent protection against abrasive wear is the reason it has been developed especially for the cold forming of highstrength steels.

CROSAL®PLUS represents the next generation of AlCrN-based hard coatings. The new coating system is an advanced development of our well-established CROSAL® coating. As a result of optimized process parameters and a tailor-made coating microstructure, this versatile high-performance coating covers all key requirements such as high oxidation resistance, excellent hot hardness and outstanding adhesive strength. CROSAL® – Plus from voestalpine eifeler is perfectly suited for the challenging areas of dry cutting, as well as the numerous applications for punching and forming, all of which benefit from the enhanced properties profile of CROSAL® – Plus.

CROSAL® PLUS COATING

Amorphous carbon coating – for use on tools, bearings and precision components. SUper CArbon SLIDE is a metalliferous, amorphous carbon coating (a-C:Me) from voestalpine eifeler. This PVD coating displays all the benefits of a modern, friction-reducing coating such as good adhesive strength, very hard, sufficient coating thickness (approx. 2 µm), low friction coefficient, very dense and smooth coating structure and biocompatible.

SUCASLIDE® COATING

CARBON-X® is a new low-friction a-C:H based DLC coating from eifeler. Due to its high hardness, CARBON-X® is the right choice for applications where high abrasive wear occurs and softer tribological coatings reach their limits.
Additionally, the welding of work piece material to tooling is significantly reduced resulting in extended tool life.
The design of eifeler’s CARBON-X® coating delivers top performance even under the toughest conditions.

For us, ‘ultrafine’ is a designation for a series of hard coatings with a decisive plus when it comes to smooth and yet extremely well-bonded and hard PVD arc coatings. Our SPCS technology stands for “Strongly Poisoned Cathode Surface” and describes our special PVD arc coating process, in which we can produce excellent coating properties using innovative gas control.
